07 Dec Holiday Home Decor | Melissa Miner
Melissa Miner gives us the inside tour of her beautiful holiday home decor.
What is the earliest you put up your Christmas tree? Tradition dictates that Christmas trees should be put up at the beginning of Advent – the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which falls this year on November 29th. My family has always had the tradition of putting our tree up the day after Thanksgiving. When my sons were little this was always such an exciting time for us to see the wonder in their eyes of hanging their ornaments that they made for us in school (I still have them) and they bring back such sweet memories for me.
Do you love to collect ornaments or gift ornaments? I do! I have a nice Waterford Crystal collection and my whole family loves the antique Shiny Brite ornaments, they are so gorgeous with such intense color and beautiful shapes but they are so very fragile!
Do you like a real tree or artificial tree? I vote real! The crisp, fresh smell of an evergreen tree is so nostalgic. I was also thinking which Christmas tree is better for the environment? I read an on-line article on nature.org that real Christmas trees are better because they help fight climate change, and even though your Christmas tree is cut down, you’re supporting forests! In the US, around 10 million artificial trees are purchased each season and remember most aren’t recyclable and end up in local landfills. \
This year has been such a different and difficult year. I noticed on social media that many people were decorating as early as October. I liked that idea. I think so many people wanted to feel joy and bring holiday cheer into their home as early as possible. We decorated our mantles and tablescapes early and that felt wonderful to get that part of the decorating finished. I even decorated my cookie jar! LOL, I have a little Christmas joy in every room.
Now that my husband and I are empty nesters we wait for our boys to come home to decorate. This year was special because it’s the first Christmas in our new home! We just put up a 12- foot Fraiser Fir which required bringing in the ladder to decorate the top. It was such a fun night at the Miner house! We played Christmas music, decorated the tree, had an amazing dinner, and ended the night playing games. It felt so good to be together and celebrate the season. That is my wish for all of you, is to be with the ones you love and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
