Spring Cleaning and Organizing

Spring Cleaning and Organizing

Are you ready? It’s time for the infamous Spring Cleaning ritual everyone loves (and hates).  Since we’ll all be spending a little more time at home, why not get this chore done now. Deep-cleaning and organizing the house is easy for some, but for those who require a little more guidance, here are our top five tips and tricks for cleaning and organizing your home this spring.

Tip #1: Plan Your Schedule and Create a Checklist

This may or may not be simple depending on the size of your home and how many rooms you have. To make things a little more manageable, break tasks or rooms up so as to not overwhelm your day with cleaning, unless you want to of course.  For each room, write down the task that needs to be done and include a checklist of supplies you’ll need to conquer it. You know the saying, planning is half the battle.

Tip #2: Take a Top-Down Approach

For each area, start from top to bottom – especially if you have ceiling fans – because after a winter, dust can really collect, and who wants to reclean the floor?  Micro fiber cloths are ideal, as they can trap dirt, loosen debris and deep-clean the way towels and regular cloths can’t. They’re also great on blinds and window casings. Have carpet or rugs? You may want to consider hiring a professional for deep cleaning (which should be done once a year). Hardwood floors are easier and for a little more deep cleaning, use a steam mop – chemical free!

Tip #3: Really Ask Yourself If You Need It

A big part of spring cleaning is decluttering and getting rid of unnecessary belongings. You know, things you haven’t used (or worn) in awhile (maybe in hopes they’ll come back in style – we get it). Just ask yourself this, if you were to move tomorrow to a place that was half the size, would you take it with you?

Tip #4: Organize. Organize. Organize.

This is the fun part! Now that your home is clean(er), find new ways to store, organize and display what is left. Think about closet organizers for purses and shoes, a tie rack perhaps. Want a cleaner look? Try storage shelves and carts, or even a new display dresser. The options are endless.  If you get the right tools, it will help you stay organized, which leads to tip #5…

Tip #5: Maintain and Assess

We that it’s easier to maintain something than to start from the beginning. So every quarter, take a little time to dust that ceiling fan, declutter and reorganize (as you’re acquiring new items).  This will make the next spring cleaning much easier so that you can spend more time out in the nice weather. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!
